Except for the flashy 'red' colors & the number (quantity) of machines & a lot of media 'HYPE' this is for the most part, 40 year old technology.

I programmed, maintained & serviced (repaired) these same kind of 'manufacturing' robots starting back in 1964 thru 1990 & they performed all of the functions shown here & some more.  Then Automation Technology/Robots were being used primarily in the aircraft, aerospace & high-tech industries.  However in the USA, the extensive use of  'manufacturing' robots & Automation Technologies as shown in this Tesla Plant was Prevented & Prohibited by the various 'UNIONS'.  This 'UNION interference' is one of the 'key' reasons for the failure of the automotive & other manufacturing industries in America.

By limiting the influence of 'UNIONS' & because Automation Technologies & manufacturing robots were put into extensive use by all industries in most foreign countries, i.e. Japan, Korea, China, etc., they easily & quickly surpassed the USA in both 'cost' & 'quality'.  'Cheaper Labor' was & is only 'one' of several factors that has allowed other countries to surpass the USA in manufacturing.  

The Major Reason American manufacturing has disappeared/failed was because of the willingness of American manufacturing's to share/transfer their product secrets, patients, knowledge & 'know how' to these foreign countries.  That action alone guaranteed the demise of American manufacturing.

The careers that pay well now & that will still be here in the future are NOT in 'labor' or software programming'.  They are in the engineering design, innovation, application of Automation/Robotics, other High Tech processes & the skilled 'Management' of these functions.  Unlike when I started in this field, today worldwide, a 'Robotic' Software Program is used to 'program' most of the functions of all 'manufacturing robots' & this does NOT require the skills of a 'software' programmer.

- Cheap toilet paper is more expensive than you might think. If you want a quality product, you need to set the tone. Surrounding your employees with quality creates a default expectation of quality and that carries through to the products that they deliver.

- Just saw a bad ass ad for Tesla - awesome factory.  They claim to be the first successful auto startup in the US in 90 years.  

They get $45k per car in taxpayer (working man) subsidies to sell $80k cars to millionaires and billionaires.  Do you consider that a "success"?
